The Department of Orthopeadic Surgery treats various types of musculoskeletal disorders, such as joint diseases, spinal/vertebral diseases, external wounds (traumas), orthopedic/surgical diseases of the limbs and peripheral nerve diseases. The number of surgeries per year is about 1,000. Professor Norio Kawahara, the Chair of the Department, and Senior Assistant Professor Masahito Kawaguchi specialize in spinal/vertebral diseases and have done many spinal surgeries, including advanced cases. Professor Tadami Matsumoto, Professor Ayumi Kaneuji, Associate Professor Toru Ichiseki and Senior Assistant Professor Kiyokazu Fukui are specialists in hip joint diseases and have performed many hip joint replacement and revision surgeries and osteotomy of hip joints on patients from all over Japan. Associate Professor Toru Ichiseki treats patients with shoulder joint diseases. Senior Assistant Professor Kentaro Hiromura treats orthopedic/surgical diseases of the limbs and peripheral nerve diseases. Areas of research include basic research on osteonecrosis of the femoral head, hip prosthesis, shoulder joint diseases and spinal cord regeneration.
